The Scriptures seriously warn of the consequences of sinning against the Holy Spirit. In Hebrews 10, the author asks:
How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace? For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge His people.” It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Hebrews 10:29–31
In context, this warning is for those who go on sinning after coming to the knowledge of the truth. Insulting God’s Spirit in that way is enough to bring about the judgment of God.
The Holy Spirit has provided the Scriptures to ensure we have the information needed to live our best lives now, and also to rest upon the promises of God for an eternal life. When pointing out this fact, the author of Hebrews asks, “how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?” (Hebrews 2:3). Of course, the answer is we won’t escape!
Jesus warned a generation that was able to look at the salvation of God in the face, so to speak. Some of their hearts were so hardened, they called the work of God the work of Satan. Jesus warned them if they continued in that state of rejection, they would never have the forgiveness God offers. We are left to assume that many of them went to their graves without ever softening their hearts, which is one of the saddest stories of all time.
Truly I say to you, all sins shall be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they utter; but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin”—because they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.” Mark 3:28–30
I will leave you with this question: What measures has God gone to for us to have access to His will, and what danger is there in neglecting it?
