Peter and John walked among the crowd on their way to the temple in Acts 3. A beggar asked them for money.
But Peter said, “I do not possess silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you: In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene—walk!” And seizing him by the right hand, he raised him up; and immediately his feet and his ankles were strengthened. With a leap he stood upright and began to walk; and he entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. Acts 3:6–8
This man learned in that moment that Peter and John came “in the name of,” or by the authority of, someone called Jesus. To claim such authority is one thing. To prove it is another. Their claim was not empty, but was so powerful that this formerly lame man’s subsequent praises have been immortalized by God in Scripture.
When Peter and John miraculously healed this man, they showed him a sign, a sign that pointed to the power of Jesus the Christ. It was John who would later tell us why Jesus’ miracles were recorded.
Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name. John 20:30–31
The signs of Jesus, His apostles, and His prophets were never designed to “show off.” Instead, they pointed to the life-giving work of Jesus the Christ, so you and I have the chance to believe in that authority and know about His kingdom. Give thanks to the God who, in His infinite wisdom, has given you access to His word. You can read of the signs, wonders, and miracles of Jesus the Nazarene.
Discussion Question: In a world where religious people are constantly asking God for a sign, what will you do with the signs He has already provided?
